Pages Router

Next.js 13 internationalization (i18n) with the Pages Router

While it's recommended to use next-intl with the App Router, the Pages Router is still fully supported.

  1. npm install next-intl
  2. Set up internationalized routing (opens in a new tab).
  3. Add the provider in _app.tsx.
_app.tsx
import {NextIntlClientProvider} from 'next-intl';

export default function App({Component, pageProps}) {
  return (
    <NextIntlClientProvider messages={pageProps.messages}>
      <Component {...pageProps} />
    </NextIntlClientProvider>
  );
}
  1. Provide messages on a page-level.
pages/index.tsx
export async function getStaticProps(context) {
  return {
    props: {
      // You can get the messages from anywhere you like. The recommended
      // pattern is to put them in JSON files separated by locale and read
      // the desired one based on the `locale` received from Next.js.
      messages: (await import(`../../messages/${context.locale}.json`)).default
    }
  };
}
  1. Use translations in your components!
